Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control how your information and ASL videos support Mackenzie\'s ASL Toolkit and its AI features.

Last updated: September 18, 2024

Information We Collect

  • Account details such as name, pronouns, email, school affiliation, learning goals, and password hashes.
  • Content you provide, including ASL videos, audio, annotations, translation prompts, chat transcripts, and assessment results.
  • Usage data such as feature interactions, device type, browser metadata, approximate location derived from IP address, and diagnostics that help us troubleshoot.
  • Communications with us, including support tickets, survey responses, and beta feedback.
  • Third-party metadata when you connect optional services (for example, classroom platforms or identity providers).

How We Use Your Information

  • Provide, personalize, and troubleshoot the Services, including syncing progress across devices.
  • Authenticate users, secure accounts, detect fraud, and enforce community standards.
  • Develop new lessons, features, and AI-powered coaching through research, experimentation, and analytics.
  • Communicate with you about updates, new content, security alerts, or policy announcements.
  • Comply with legal obligations, such as responding to lawful requests or enforcing agreements.

Data Sharing and Processors

  • We process data in Google Cloud and Firebase for hosting, authentication, storage, and analytics.
  • LiveKit or similar vendors handle real-time video rooms; they receive the media streams necessary to connect participants.
  • We rely on AI infrastructure such as Genkit, Vertex AI, or other vetted partners to evaluate or train models. Data shared with those processors is governed by agreements that restrict use to our instructions.
  • Service providers such as email vendors, payment processors, or customer-support tools may access limited data strictly to deliver contracted functionality.
  • We never sell personal data. We may disclose aggregated or de-identified insights publicly, provided individuals cannot be identified.

AI Model Training and Video Use

  • Explicit, high-resolution signing videos may include biometric identifiers and sensitive characteristics. We treat this content as sensitive and apply access controls, encryption, and audit logging.
  • By default, we use eligible uploads, annotations, and derived embeddings to train, validate, audit, and monitor ASL recognition, translation, avatar, and accessibility models.
  • You may opt out of model-training use at any time within Profile > Settings > Privacy or by emailing privacy@mackenziesasl.com with your account email. We will confirm when the opt-out is active and propagate it across downstream datasets.
  • Opting out removes your future uploads from training corpora but does not retroactively delete models already produced. We will, however, stop refreshing those models with your data going forward.
  • If you participate in funded research studies or classroom pilots, we may request a separate consent specific to that program.

Your Choices and Rights

  • Access, update, or delete profile information from your account dashboard. For additional requests, contact us at privacy@mackenziesasl.com.
  • Download a copy of your learning data by emailing support. We will respond within 30 days or faster where required by law.
  • Control marketing communications by using unsubscribe links or adjusting notification settings.
  • Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to object to processing, restrict processing, or file a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

Data Retention

  • We retain account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove or anonymize personal data within 60 days, except where we need to keep records for legal, accounting, or safety reasons.
  • Content shared in collaborative spaces (for example, classroom boards) may remain visible to other participants even after you delete your copy.
  • Backup archives are purged on a rolling basis and are not actively used beyond disaster recovery.

Security

  • We use encryption in transit, scoped access controls, continuous monitoring, and regular security reviews.
  • You can enhance security by enabling multi-factor authentication when available and by choosing strong, unique passwords.
  • Report suspected security incidents immediately to security@mackenziesasl.com so we can investigate.

Children and Educators

  • The Services are not directed to children under 13. Educators or guardians who add minors to a classroom space are responsible for obtaining any necessary consents.
  • If we learn that we collected personal data from a child without required consent, we will delete it promptly.

International Users

  • We operate from the United States and may process data in other countries where our vendors are located. These locations may have different data-protection standards than your home jurisdiction.
  • By using the Services, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States and other jurisdictions as needed to provide the product.
